WHITECHAPEL FILM PROGRAMME: SHAMANS OF THE BLIND COUNTRY
Sat 6 May, 2pm
Shamans of the Blind Country (Schmananen im Blinden Land)
Michael Oppitz, Nepal/Federal Republic of Germany/US, 1978-80, 223mins
An epic and beautiful filmic essay on the world of the Magar Shamans of
Northwestern Nepal by director and anthropologist Michael Oppitz. The
four-hour film, rarely seen in public and of which only a few copies survive,
is a substantial achievement. Specifically combining rigorous ethnographic
research with a structuralist approach to theorising social and mythical
reality it impressed such artists no less than Joseph Beuys and Sigmar Polke
and Beat author William S. Burroughs part-narrates. A rare synthesis.
The film will be introduced by Arnd Schneider (Reader in Anthropology,
University of East London), who will also speak about his new book (co-edited
with Chris Wright), 'Contemporary Art and Anthropology'.
Tickets: £5.50/£3.50
