“Deconstructing
Empire”:
An Interdisciplinary
Graduate Student
Symposium
Call for Papers
State and civil violence continue to plague the world. For some, this is the
immutable result of Empire and "Coalitions of the Willing." For others, the
problem is broader and more personal, rooted in a social propensity towards
violence. This interdisciplinary symposium for graduate students will focus
on
examining local/global solutions for overcoming war and violence, based on
lessons learned, past and present. Examples of related research topics
include
colonialism, racism, heterosexism, ablism, anthropocentrism, and sexism;
historical and legal dimensions on war and peace, conflict resolution,
reform
and revolution, analysis of government, institutional and structural
policies;
alternate economies; peace and the academy; global education, faith-based
and
social movements, and others.
This symposium is a preparatory event for the World Peace Forum to be held
in
June 2006 in Vancouver. In the week leading up to this event, the
University of
Victoria will participate in Victoria Peace Days, June 19-23, in order to
showcase the work and initiatives of local/global organizations,
researchers,
and committed citizens. On Thursday, June 22, the University of Victoria
Graduate Students' Society, The World History Caucus and The Centre for
Studies
in Religion and Society will be hosting a symposium to highlight the diverse
work of graduate students in this area.
We invite graduate students from all disciplines and at all stages of their
degrees to submit paper and poster proposals for this day-long symposium.
Please send a maximum 200 word abstract to [log in to unmask] by April 21.
