> Title: The Randomised Clinical Trial: Fact-Making and The Science of
> Social Benefit
>
> Abstract: How does medical research generate social benefit? Bringing
> my UK-based doctoral research into conversation with a collaborative
> project on a Malaria Vaccine Trial that took place in The Gambia, this
> presentation considers the assumptions about public good built into our
> scientific methods. As an instrument both to assess therapeutic
> effectiveness and to justify national health expenditure, in the British
> context, the RCT situates scientific research within the structures of
> government policy. However, in a situation of health crisis where
> medical attention provided by international research projects is the
> only available clinical care, the categories of scientific research and
> clinical care, study population and patient public are highly unstable.
> I will develop this comparative context to raise questions about the
> means and ends of scientific practice of medical research taking place
> in Africa. In sum, my argument hopes to bring into view the
> discrepancies between the notions of public good that underwrite
> clinical research and the social forms characteristic to the people
> under study.
