CALL FOR PAPERS
Inaugural International Conference on Sport and Spirituality

Host: Centre for the Study of Sport and Spirituality
http://sportspirituality.yorksj.ac.uk

Contact: Edward Kirby
Email: [log in to unmask]
Telephone +44 (0)1904 876517

Date: 28-31 August 2007

Venue: York St John University, York, England

Background
The establishment of The Centre for the Study of Sport and Spirituality (CSSS) in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at York St John University is a new and exciting development that provides a forum for academic study and debate. The Centre is dedicated to promoting scholarly activity through research, teaching, publication, conferences, symposia and collaboration with others. As sport is arguably the most popular cultural pastime of the western world, if not worldwide, it is hoped the work of the Centre can help foster a culture that emphasises the importance of the spiritual, moral and ethical dimensions of sport. The Centre will be officially launched at the Conference and it is hoped that scholars and practitioners from across the disciplines can meet to engage in a critical discussion about the spiritual and religious aspects of sport. Conference themes will appeal to scholars and practitioners from disciplines such as sports studies, philosophy, theology and
religious studies, physical education and coaching, psychology, health studies, literature, history and sociology.

Conference Themes
As this conference is an inaugural event, we welcome abstracts from a wide-range of topics and contexts in the sports world that encompass the
full breadth of human spiritual experience in sport and exercise. In line with the ethos of the CSSS and York St John University, this includes
perspectives from all major western and eastern faith traditions and humanistic/transcendent accounts of spirituality. On this note, the keynote
presentations shown on the conference page of the CSSS website identify some of the many themes that may evolve from the submission of abstracts.

Keynote Speakers
Professor Michael Novak, American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research, WA, USA.
Professor Emeritus Shirl Hoffman, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, USA.
Dr Mark Nesti, York St John University, York, England.
Professor Ken Ravizza, California State University, Fullerton, CA, USA.
Professor Scott Kretchmar, Penn State University, PA, USA.
Professor James Mathisen, Wheaton College, IL, USA.

Conference Publication
Each delegate will receive a book of Conference Abstracts. It is anticipated that Keynote lectures and a number of invited essays will be published as a book volume that will include a scholarly bibliography of publications in the area of sport/exercise and spirituality/religion. Further information will also be available at the conference concerning the forthcoming International Journal of Religion and Sport that is affilated to the CSSS.

Abstract Submission
Abstracts of 200-300 words should be submitted no later than Friday 27 January 2007. Please send abstracts electronically as MS Word (or
compatible) attached files to Edward Kirby, Email: [log in to unmask] If email is not an option please send 3 hard copies to: Edward Kirby, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, York St John University, Lord Mayor's Walk, York, England, Y031 7EX. Please include your name, a two-sentence biography, contact address, institution or affiliation, email address and state the type of proposed presentation, i.e., oral or poster presentation, or mini-workshop. Oral presentations and mini-workshops should last no more than 35 minutes including time for questions. There will be allocated time slots for "poster sessions" in which presenters can share and discuss their research/scholarship.

For information on registration fees and accommodation, see the accompanying attached Conference Booking Form. For further information on the CSSS, Keynote speakers' abstracts, screening of a film and presentation on Jewish women in sport, information on the beautiful historic city of York, please visit the CSSS website at: http://sportspirituality.yorksj.ac.uk
