*"Making Sense in the City"* is an international and interdisciplinary
symposium that focuses on the impact of global urbanization on those
cultural, religious and other ways which generally give human beings
meaning and direction in their lives, which we refer to as
'sense-making' processes. Numerous renowned academics, artists and
representatives from life-stance and sociocultural organisations will
participate in a three-day interactive event of lectures, debates and
artistic performances.
The *central themes* (and *keynote speakers*) are:
*
the urban context and its community building features (Ulf Hannerz)
*
the city context and/versus traditions of sense making: Islam,
Evangelical/Pentecostal missions: (Mohammed Arkoun)
*
the urban context as a cosmopolitan versus a cultural phenomenon
(e.g. India and the West): (Paola Bacchetta)
*
urban context and media/types of communication: (Faye Ginsburg)
*
urban context and inequality or empowerment (Loïc Wacquant)
*
the urban context as built environment and power structure:
triggering conflicts on making sense: (Abdou Maliq Simone)
