Research Assistant
in Quantitative Expert Judgement and Model Uncertainty
Department of Management Science
Up to £22,958
Applications are invited for this research position which is available for
a period of three and a half years. There are two elements to the
position:
For 2/3 of the time you will work with Prof Tim Bedford on an EPSRC funded
project “Coupled models: Expert Judgement, Emulators and Model
Uncertainty”. This project, which encompasses researchers from the
Universities of Strathclyde, Sheffield, Bristol and Nottingham, aims to
study the way in which emulators, a modern way of building statistical
approximations of complex numerical models, can be used to integrate
expert judgement and help quantify model uncertainties. You will carry out
this work in parallel with two PhD students working in the other
institutions, who will concentrate on specific applications to aerospace
and environmental engineering. The other academics involved in this
project are Dr Jeremy Oakley (Sheffield University), Dr Sondipon Adhikari
(Bristol University) and Prof Andrew Cliffe (Nottingham University). More
information about this project can be found at
www.managementscience.org/emulator.aspx.
For 1/3 of the time, you will work on other applications of expert
judgement in risk and reliability analyses. You will work closely with
academic staff, in particular Professors Lesley Walls, Tim Bedford and Dr
John Quigley and alongside 2 other research assistants working in related
areas. There are also opportunities for you to gain teaching experience,
although this will be limited to keep a research focus.
You will preferably have a PhD in Operational Research, Probability or
Statistics, and will join a lively group working in Management Science in
risk and reliability. The group has an international reputation, and
works together with leading companies and agencies on a number of
different applied and theoretical projects. In 2007 we host the
international Mathematical Methods in Reliability Conference, at which
project results will be presented. The Department of Management Science is
one of the UK’s leading OR departments, running amongst other things a
successful MSc in Operational Research.
Details about the department can be found at
http://www.managementscience.org.
