This communication should end, James
It is inappropriate for this site
However, you ask for answers to Abusive? Where? .... and being polite and professional, I will have the courtesy to reply to you
In answer to your query, I made my comments and points about the original email.
I was, in no way, personal in my remarks but was giving an opinion - which was one you did not like but I am still entitled to give
I could have emailed you offlist as you suggested but I do not know you to do this and felt that as the email was onlist, replies should be such
Your reply to me offlist, in my opinion, was ABUSIVE - in fact, I would even say threatening and bullying
(..." need more than .... if you met me face to face" .... "go back into your little box" ....)
My colleagues and some others have emailed similar comments to me regarding this
I will not be intimidated or harrassed like that by you or anyone else and so posted your inappropriate reply for the list to view such behaviour which I believe to be unprofessional and shocking in the context of an OH professional
I stand by my original comments made about the 'joke' posted
Again, wonder if you would have used a joke that was of black, asian, disability or muslim in origin
If the answer is NO, then this one should not have been used
A Swann rightly suggests the use of the pic without race reference to be effective

Here is James' off list abusive reply to me (worth list seeing):
" You would need more of a deep breath if you met me face to face with
this kind of abuse. If you want to criticise me, do so off list. But
take a look at the vast number of responses from Irish folk who found it
funny.
I think you need to go back into your little box.
zzzzzzzzzzzz"
My email was a point of view and not abusive I don't see the abuse in my
email but I seem to hitting a raw nerve somewhere Anger management
springs to mind here, James Your reply is very abusive, unnecessary and
worrying
Apology for others on this site but worth seeing this reply I think

Seems to be case of extreeme sense of humour failure here. But I have
emailed this chap OFF LIST with my comments.
Pity he couldn't do the same.

Think I had decided not to get into this discussion any more but this
email has prompted another response
James, I think you have completely missed the message as there is no
application to OH for any racist joke - what of OH as a representative
and supporter of Equal Opps and any forms of Discrimination Humour is
great and needed especially in presentations but this is at the expense
of a race and so not appropriate I love my humour and my daily dose of
email jokes as colleagues can vouch for
The message you wanted to get across could surely be got across without
racist humour
BIG QUESTION........
If you had a slide of a Black or Asian or disabled or Muslim topic,
would you use it I ASSUME NOT So why this one?? Why is this deemed
appropriate and relevant to OH??
Someone previously emailed that UK have been telling Irish jokes for
years but this does not make it right
Big deep breath now and I will probably regret sending but here goes

Having just got back from 2 days out of the office having attended one
of the HSE launches on the Stress standards in birmingham and then a
user group meeting in Leeds for my new OH software, i am quite
astonished at some of the comments about this email I sent early on
Monday morning. But I just want to set the records straight.
The slides have actually been doing the rounds both formally and
informally with our HR colleagues as it is part of a training session
that has a very valid point , whilst at the same time being humourous.
God forbid the day when training becomes bland.
The message it actually portarays is that you should never take on a
task or work that you are not trained for, do not have the correct tools
for, or are not competent to do it. This is something we can all apply
to our own work.
So, in answer toe bashy and others, there was a message which does apply
to Occupational Health practice. It just got lost in the trees....

Dear List
At times subscribers seem to forget the purpose of this list, which is
to promote and share information in OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH. It is an
international list with 650+ subscribers, many of whom are no doubt very
busy people and yet over two days they have had to endure 18! emails
under the heading Irish Car Recovery.
At a time when there are many important issues going on in Occupational
Health, I wonder what impression is being created about the occupational
health profession in the UK! We won't even start going into the
netiquette with regard to Race Discrimination.
I suggest that we now get back to some serious discussion about
occupational health issues.

Bashyr Aziz
