Hi Jacqui,
Yes it can happen. If the toenail is brittle (perhaps mycotic), splits or
fragments close to the sulci, then the trauma inflammed skin around the area
(assisted by compressing hose and footwear) could develop into an IGTN.
Simple solution is to always cut the toenails straight across, then nip and
file the corners round - of course using proper toenail clippers and files.
