I think the notion that artists can future proof their work is a double edged sword, do they try and
use untested hardware and software in the hope that it will become an industry standard, and in
principle be easy to maintain and update, or do they use existing technologies that often make the
feel dated, and will be superseded in 18 months.
Some of these issues we are encountering with the implementation of RFID into exhibitions, weather
passive or active tags are the way forward etc…
As to Simons point I think the distinction between technologically based and others are systems
based is a poignant one, works that are system based would have in principle a longer life span than
those tied to technology, unless there were in place a commitment by the artists and the
commissioners to keep the hardware updated.
