Dear All,
(Apologies for-cross posting)
At Leeds, we are beginning to look at what's involved in dealing with bulk
sets of records for titles contained in e-book packages. We started out
by adding individual records for e-books to our catalogue pretty much on
an ad hoc basis, but as the acquisition of packages seems set to increase
significantly, it is evident that local cataloguing is no longer viable,
and we need to adopt a strategy that can cope with the large numbers
involved. Although we have bought sets of electronic records from vendors
for two significant collections, EEBO and ECCO, we haven't as yet
developed a policy for buying in records for the many other collections we
subscribe to. So, we are interested in finding out if any libraries
acquire bulk sets of records from vendors as a matter of course. We'd
like to know what sort of issues and problems are involved, and how they
are handled. Some of the issues we have in mind are:
1. the standard of these bibliographic records and the impact on the
catalogue in terms of authority control, consistency of headings, etc.
2. handling records in non-MARC21 format (conversion issues, etc.)
3. how the purchase and acquisition of records from vendors are managed
4. how, once loaded into the catalogue, the records for items within
individual collections are managed (additions, deletions, substitutions)
5. managing the updating/deletion of records when an entire package is
discontinued
6. implications of licensing restrictions, e.g. for bibliographic record
sharing, etc.
We'd also like to hear about any other issues that libraries may have
encountered or considered.
Thank you.
