Alas Hilda, John is no Dirk Bogarde although his penchant for Madeira probably suggests he suffers from the same malade as poor Mr Dubedat.

Dear John,
Much as I would like to would support this splendid idea, I am totally overcome with dismay, that you will not be personally taking the lead in this. As my grandma used to say 'there is no show without Punch' - as in Punch and Judy.
so, I regret, as far as I am concerned there can be no show, without yourself!
Kind regards,
Hilda

Those of you who are avid readers of the BMJ cannot fail to have noticed that on November 20, the centenary of its first public performance, Sir Muir Gray and a selection of colleagues are performing an open reading of George Bernard Shaw's The Doctor's Dilemma. Anyone incomprehensibly unfamiliar with this seminal work will be interested to learn that it takes a sidelong look at the issues of ethical decision-making and healthcare rationing.
The venue of the proposed performance is not stated, but it is safe to assume that it will not be deep in the Trough of Bowland, spiritual and geographical heartland of Health Libraries NW. However, what Sir Muir and his colleagues can do, we in the north-west can do better. I am, therefore, proposing that we mount a full-scale production of this piece (costumes and all, and none of that nonsense about not having enough time to learn parts: the play's a mere 156 pages long). With D Stewart as director and L Ferguson cast in the lead role of Mrs Dubechat our production is guaranteed to attract rave reviews.
Please send emails expressing your support for this project and announcing your willingness to take a major role in this smash hit direct to the director-to-be. Owing to a prior engagement with a sunbed in Madeira I regret that I personally will be unable to take a part in this extravaganza, but wish the rest of you all the best in this exciting venture.
