I'm a drawer, researcher and lecturer in Drawing. I
completed the MA DRAWING course at Camberwell in 2004.
Although offered three MA Drawing places by the top
three reputable course providers in the UK, I opted
for Camberwell. It has to be said it was a somewhat
difficult choice between Wimbledon and Camberwell
initially (Wimbledon is also renowned for its Centre
For Drawing and is linked with the Jerwood Drawing
Prize) but Camberwell weighed more heavily in the end.
The main criteria were the approaches and standards of
the MA Drawing tutors there, particularly Dr Angela
Eames (who is the Course Leader & Head of MA Drawing).
She is an exceptionally intelligent, if not genial,
contemporary practitioner and thinker of Drawing. In a
way, she is the Motherwell of Drawing. Her papers on
Drawing are gems, both conceptually and intellectually
so you will no doubt find them useful at some point
throughout your research. There are various other
extremely sound tutors like Martyn Simpson and Garry
Woodley in MA Drawing (bar the odd one who isn't) who
will inspire and challenge you beyond belief.
You will have the right degree of autonomous and
guided research on the course and the resources and
campuses of the University of the Arts London are
unrivalled in London (you will have access to all the
UOAL colleges, libraries, studios, lectures, campuses
at Camberwell, St Martins, Byam Shaw, Chelsea,
Wimbledon.
If you are not scared of exercising your skills and
intellect and being challenged (expect little praise
knowing that you are doing rather well if you don't
get much of it), then MA Drawing at Camberwell is for
you. Since Wimbledon have now joined Camberwell/UOAL,
the finest alternatives become quite obvious.
Another recommendation is chasing Angela up by phone
for a drop-in, provisional meeting to discuss your
proposal.
