Where to start with doodling? If she's trying to investigate a history of
the doodle in art she could look at Masson, Miro, Picasso, Paul Klee, or
Leonardo da Vinci to start with. Jane Austen mentions doodles in Northanger
Abbey.
There was an artist who make a whole book of pictures which were kind of
doodles based on ink blots -the name escapes me, but I think was German, and
it's probably the first book of doodles as we'd understand it. No doubt
better informed list members will know his name.
Going back another century - Guercino - his informal sketches and doodles
are well known.
Richard Wentworth included doodles in his Thinking Aloud exhibition, so
might be worth tracing the catalogue. He's very interested in the 'street
doodle' though he doesn't call it that: pictures of random objects, rubbish,
signs in the street.
