GRADUATE CRIMINOLOGY IN OXFORD
ESRC ‘1+3 Studentships’

The Centre for Criminology at the University of Oxford is delighted to be able to offer up to four ESRC 1+3 studentships to commence in October 2006.
Each of the studentships covers the cost of fees for four years (starting at £3168 for 2006/07) together with a stipend for each year commencing at £12,300 per annum. The studentship enables each successful applicant to study for the MSc Criminology and Criminal Justice (Research Methods) in the first year, followed by three years of doctoral research leading to the award of a DPhil.

ESRC 1 + 3 Criminology Studentships at Oxford
1+3 studentships are divided into two connected parts. Each of the successful applicants will in the first year of the award undertake the MSc Criminology and Criminal Justice (Research Methods). This includes:
• Core courses in ‘Explanation and understanding in criminology’ and ‘Understanding criminal justice’
• Research training encompassing courses in ‘Research design and data analysis’, ‘Statistical methods in the social sciences’, ‘Social explanation and data analysis’ and ‘Qualitative research methods’
• Two optional courses on substantive criminological topics
• Dissertation
The award-holder will then proceed to a three-year research programme during which they pursue independent research leading to the award of a doctorate. Further advanced research training is provided during this period of research.
The Centre for Criminology is able to offer doctoral supervision to applicants in any of the following research fields:
• crime control politics and policy
• crime, criminology and social/political theory.
• death penalty
• desistance
• human rights and criminal justice
• mafias and organized crime
• policing and security
• prisons
• public responses to crime
• restorative justice
• risk, crime and justice
• sentencing
• sociology of punishment
• victims

How to Apply
Applications are invited from those who have, or expect by October to have obtained, a first class, or high upper second class degree in a relevant subject, such as: criminology, sociology, law, social policy, politics, and history.
The application must include two copies (one original and one duplicate) of the following information:

-An official transcript of previous higher education results up to the present
-Two pieces of written work
-CV/Resume
-Three academic references
-One two-page (max.) outline of a proposed doctoral study (this should indicate your chosen topic; why you are interested in it; the research questions you want to ask, and how you propose to answer them).
