Dear All,
I am studying a painting attributed to an artist who was active
between 1935 and 1950. Infrared spectra of a series of paint
specimens show features consistent with reference spectra for basic
magnesium carbonate (Baker, (MgCO3)4 Mg(OH)2 H2O). The material is
not magnesium carbonate (magnesite) nor calcium magnesium carbonate
(dolomite).
I have encountered basic magnesium carbonate fewer than five times in
more than 1000 analytical studies of paint, and would be grateful for
information you might have about the historical introduction or use
of basic magnesium carbonate in paints.
