Dear all,
Some time ago we recovered from a 1st quarter 4th century Roman layer,
metal parts of what seems to be the remains of a key. To be sure, both
parts belong to the same key, I performed a SEM-EDX analysis (without
standard. I expected to find bronze artefacts, but to my surprise, the
composition was in fact a lead bronze. According to Tylecote and various
sources on the internet, this alloy was well known.
Can anybody give me an idea how common this alloy is. The composition
shows some spread, because EDX is not very suitable for this kind of
inhomogeneous materials. The composition is: Cu (70-79wt%), Sn (1.7-3.7)
and Pb (15-26wt%).
Could I determine the composition more accurate without sacrifycing a part
of the material ?
I am looking foreward to your reactions.
Best regards,
Peter Seinen
