Universiteit van Amsterdam

Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences

The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) of the  
Universiteit van Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ largest educational  
and research institution in the social sciences. The Faculty provides  
tuition to 7,500 students in numerous Bachelor’s and Master’s  
programmes that are spread over six educational institutes. The  
academic staff are engaged in both teaching and research. The Faculty  
encourages the international exchange of knowledge and, hence, staff  
and student mobility. The Faculty has more than 1,100 employees and  
is housed in several buildings in the centre of Amsterdam.

The FMG’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology has a vacancy for  
an Assistant professor (universitair docent) of Development Sociology

For both internal and external candidates

The appointee will work in the Department’s section on Comparative  
Sociology, Anthropology and History of Asia. The Department is  
responsible for academic staff who engage in teaching and research  
activities in sociology and anthropology. The Department’s research  
activities are organized in the context of research institutes, in  
this case the Amsterdam School for Social Science Research (ASSR).  
Teaching programmes are organized through the Amsterdam Institute for  
Social Science Education (AIM) and the English-language postgraduate  
programmes of the International School for the Humanities and Social  
Sciences (ISHSS). Research and educational institutes are autonomous  
and have their own admission and performance standards.

The appointee will develop his or her own research agenda within the  
field in cooperation with other members of the section. He or she  
will teach at both the BA and the MA level in non-western sociology  
and anthropology, development sociology, methodologies of social  
science research and, preferably, Asian studies.

Tasks

The appointee will be expected to:
• teach courses at the BA and the MA level in non-western sociology,  
development sociology and, preferably, Asian studies.
• teach research methods at the BA and the MA level
• take on administrative responsibilities (e.g. the management of  
teaching)
• attract external funding for research projects
• participate in the development of interdisciplinary research  
programmes.

Requirements

Candidates must:
• hold a PhD in the social sciences, preferably in the field of the  
sociology of non-western societies, development sociology or social  
anthropology
• have a thorough grasp of anthropological and sociological theories,  
especially with regard to development sociology and, preferably,  
Asian studies
• have a very good teaching record
• have experience in conducting empirical research in non-western  
societies, preferably in Asia
• have a good number of articles published in international refereed  
journals and by international publishers
• be able to participate in teamwork
• be open-minded towards interdisciplinary research and teaching
• be fluent in both English and Dutch (if the appointee lacks  
proficiency in Dutch, he or she will be expected to master the  
language within two years).

Appointment
The appointment will be full time. Depending upon the appointee’s  
qualifications and experience, the salary will be in the range € 3024  
to € 4705 gross per month plus benefits (UD2/1).
