GlaxoSmithKline-funded Studentship in Biostatistics
The Centre of Biostatistics is pleased to be able
to offer a GSK-funded studentship for PhD study in
evaluating the role and influence of cormorbidity
in Epidemiological studies of outcome among, possibly
treated, patients with chronic disease (such as COPD).
The work will involve, inter alia, the development of
appropriate statistical models designed to detect
malignant interactions in very high dimensional (and sparse)
contingency tables generated by low frequency multivariate
binary data.
The successful candidate will have a first class
honours degree or a good II.1 in (a) Mathematical Statistics
or (b) a degree in Mathematics with a high Mathematical
Statistical content. Preference will be given to
candidates with an MSC in a relevant Statistical
area.
The newly created Centre offers a pleasant working
environment on the 600 acre, University of Limerick,
campus on the banks of the Shannon (http://www.ul.ie/).
The 3-year studentship is open to EU nationals. It
covers fees and provides an enhanced student stipend
of EUR16,000 tax-free, rising in subsequent years. There
is also provision for regular conference travel and to
GSK (London). The successful candidate will be
supervised by Professor Gilbert MacKenzie (CoB, UL)
and Dr Victor Kiri (Respiratory Epidemiology, GSK)
Overall, this is an excellent opportunity for students seeking
a career in mainstream Medical or Biostatistics. The deadline
for applications is Friday June 30th .
For further information about the studentship and informal
enquiries in the first instance contact Professor MacKenzie
