INSTITUTE OF FORENSIC SCIENCE
SCHOOL OF CRIMINAL SCIENCES
UNIVERSITY OF LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND
The Institute is looking for a statistician (preferably full time) for a
period of two years to work on a research project devoted to the
statistical analysis of partial fingerprints. The project is funded by
the TSWG (US Dept. of Defence).
The School of Criminal Sciences (ESC) and its Institute of forensic
sciences of the University of Lausanne is seeking an experienced
individual to join a team working on a project financed by the US
Technical Support Working Group (www.tswg.gov). The project will last
for a period of 24 months.
The ESC has a research programme on fingerprint statistics applied to
forensic science since 1995. Following research already funded by TSWG
(2003-2005), the ESC is about to start a new project aiming at exploring
topological models for assessing fingerprint variability.
You will have a strong background in statistics, preferably with
emphasis on spatial statistics or statistical pattern recognition. You
are willing to take the lead in developing algorithms to explore the
statistical variability of fingerprint patterns (especially partial marks).
We are looking for an enthusiastic team player to join a group devoted
to fingerprint statistics research. A full degree in Statistics or
Mathematics is required. For this challenging and rewarding role,
postgraduate experience of image analysis, spatial statistics or pattern
recognition would be a real advantage, as would a relevant PhD. You will
bring to the team expertise in the use and implementation of innovative
statistical methods for fingerprint image analysis. The environment for
development will be Matlab®. In addition the candidate is expected to
show ability to work independently and effectively within a team (with a
forensic scientists and a computer scientist) and will need the ability
to work to a highly structured schedule in order to meet demanding
deadlines. Good communication skills (written and oral) and knowledge of
English will be beneficial.
The work location is our institute in Lausanne on the University campus;
the planned starting date is October 2006 (subject to the TSWG pending
contract).
The salary for this position will be circa CHF 80’000 per year (full
time) depending on relevant qualifications and experience.
Closing date for receipt of written applications will be 10th September
2006.
