My understanding was that it depends on which other universities the
Guardian reports in the specific Guardian Subject Group.
The actual spend per student will be the same, but the score depends on
which universities they are comparing you with, so the range of
universities with students coded to religion would be different from
those with students doing English - so the score is different.
Of course, I might be wrong - this is the Guardian after all.

Dear All,
We have an ongoing query regarding the spend per student.
Last year departments belonging to the same HESA cost centre all had the
same spend per student (which is what I would expect). This is not the
case in this year's tables.
Matters are further complicated by the merger of CCs 31 and 32 in
2004/05. I believe the Guardian used 2004/05 figures for students and
2003/04 figures for expenditure (which is questionable in itself).
Assuming expenditure in CCs 31 and 32 was amalgamated for 2003/04 and
divided by the student nos for 2004/05, I would have expected just one
figure for the spend per student for those departments in the new
Humanities & Language Based Studies cost centre. We have 3 different
scores across 6 departments.
Regards,
Brian
