PhD Studentship
Residential location, car ownership and travel behaviour
Home or EU fees paid plus stipend of £12,500 per year
(not available for overseas students)
Candidates are invited to apply for a PhD studentship in the Department of
Civil Engineering at the University of Strathclyde to start on 1st October
2006. The successful candidate will conduct research on the travel choices
made by individuals in different urban settings and to understand how and
why measures of urban form (individually, collectively or through
interaction with other variables) influence travel behaviour and will
explore the potential for new development or the reconfiguration of
existing development to promote sustainable transport patterns. Panel data
will be used to explore causal relationships linking residential location
choice, car ownership and activity patterns. The work will be undertaken
in conjunction with the CITYFORM Consortium which is funded by EPSRC under
the Sustainable Urban Environments Programme and the successful candidate
will work closely with members of the transport research group in the
Department of Civil Engineering.
The successful candidate will have a first degree of at least a 2.1 rating
or its equivalent in a numerate discipline or a subject with a potential
application in travel behaviour research. Suitable Masters level
qualifications will also be considered. Knowledge of theoretical and
methodological issues related to travel demand modelling and experience of
undertaking travel surveys and / or GIS will be an advantage.
Interested candidates should contact Dr Neil Ferguson, Department of Civil
Engineering, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, G4 0NG or e-mail
[log in to unmask] before the 2nd June 2006.
