Like Lesley, I'm curious too. Even if the aim is to support early(-ish)
career researchers, imposing an age limit negatively impacts on those who
have returned to/entered research after having children, or those who have
been working half-time due to family commitments. As these people are
usually women, age limits have been discussed as part of the 'glass
ceiling' in gender & science debates.
Saying that, I'm not yet 40, do social science research at the science
communication/science policy interface, and I host Brighton Cafe
Scientifique. If I can identify a topic that would be of interest to both
school children and retired scientists, I might enjoy giving the Joseph
Lister Lecture. It would be useful to find out what social science topics
have featured at the BA before.
Best wishes
Jenny
