“40 copies of Messiah please...” A day course for library staff who need to borrow music sets for choirs and orchestras

This unique course is designed to help public and academic music library staff to obtain, confidently and successfully, sets of vocal and orchestral music for choirs and orchestras in the communities they serve.
Objectives
At the end of the day you will :
* be able to identify the different types of material required by choirs and orchestras
* understand why choirs and orchestras make special demands on the library service
* be confident and knowledgeable in knowing how and where to obtain vocal and orchestral sets
* be able to organise and manage a music sets lending system for local choirs and orchestras
* understand how the UK interlending system for music sets operates
The training team
Jane Henshaw is the Learning Resources Adviser for music and performing arts at Colchester Institute
Malcolm Jones was Head of Music Services at Birmingham for 25 years. Since 1995 he has worked on a variety of library and I.T. projects including Encore!
Ruth Hellen was, until recently, Library Resources Unit Manager at Enfield. She is the project director for Encore! and a Vice-president of IAML.
Each member of the training team has extensive experience of managing vocal and orchestral sets. All are members of IAML(UK & Irl), the professional organisation which represents music libraries and librarians throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.

1.45 Managing the loan
- borrowing the set
- time imperatives; time constraints
- replacing lost scores and parts
2.30 Where’s that set?
- a practical session giving you the opportunity
to try out your new-found skills and knowledge
and learn how to avoid the common pitfalls.

There will be regular opportunities throughout the day for participants to ask questions of the training team.
