We also used FDL square buckets and had to find a replacement last year. Despite many initial objections, we are now using rectangular buckets with plastic handles and current opinion is that they are even better than the square ones. They are easier to carry as the rectangular shape means that they don't bash legs when carrying a bucket in each hand. The handle is also more ergonomic and we haven't had any break so far. The supplier assured me that they are equal in strength to the metal ones. I actually prefer the plastic handles as our site staff had taken to pulling the metal handles out of the attachment in order to feed through a punched label (obviously using string is too much trouble). This had resulted in most of the handle attachments breaking and thus buckets with no handles (or labels) at all. Subsequently I now have staff asking to use plastic labels (what is wrong with string???)but previous experience has shown that the plastic labels either come off or refuse to do so leading to confusion on subsequent sites.
The rectangular buckets stack well and are less likely to be pinched for finds. The suppliers are:

If you ask for Robert Barton he can actually source metal handled buckets for those of you who are able to use string!
Marker pens - Artline 700 and 70 - available from most stationary suppliers
