The New York State Museum seeks applicants for a permanent curatorial and research position of Indian Culture Specialist, Grade 22, Curator of Ethnography. This staff member will provide oversight for the State Museum Ethnography Collections, provide liaison with New York Native American communities, and perform and disseminate related research. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Conduct independent ethnographic research related to the Indians of New York State and disseminate the results of that research through peer-reviewed publications, public programs, and exhibits; provide curation of the Museum’s ethnographic collection; provide liaison with the State’s Indian communities; organize and lead annual K-12 teachers workshops on the State’s Native Peoples; seek funding for research and collections program through competitive grants and other outside sources.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in Anthropology or related field and three years of research experience, OR Ph.D. in anthropology or a related field and two years of research experience.
Preferred candidates will have at least two years experience in ethnographic collection care and management, a record of Native American ethnographic research and peer-reviewed publications, and a record of participating in regional and national ethnographic and/or ethno-historical conferences. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to obtain outside funding through grants and/or other sources.
This will be a provisional appointment pending a new Civil Service examination. This position, located in Albany, NY, will be filled at Grade 22, with a salary of $53,080 leading to a maximum of $65,502 based on annual performance advances.The New York State Education Department is an Affirmative Action / Equal Opportunity employer.
