UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM
DIVISION OF MEDICAL SCIENCES
Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU)
Senior Medical Statistician (1 post) - M18316
Medical Statistician (2 posts) - M32707
This unit, directed by Professors Richard Gray and Keith Wheatley, is funded by the NHS to undertake clinical research across a wide range of medical specialties. The BCTU provides an advisory service to clinicians wishing to undertake clinical trials, and also adopts a proactive role by undertaking meta-analyses of current evidence, and instigating new clinical trials in key areas where current evidence is inadequate. The BCTU's main in-house studies are in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, renal disease, surgery, women's health and leukaemia, but the Unit has also provided advice and support to over 100 other studies. At its recent quinquennial review, BCTU's research was rated high A (maximum score) for both quality and relevance and commended as world class in terms of quality and significance for health. The BCTU is located at Park Grange, a large Victorian house with extensive gardens, which provides a pleasant and stimulating environment.
Applications are invited from experienced medical statisticians who wish to advance their career within a successful, expanding clinical research Unit (since its establishment in 1997, the BCTU has been awarded over £10 million in external funding.) The successful candidates will play a central role in the Unit's research, consultancy and educational activities including designing trials and assessing their feasibility, funding applications, oversight of trial processes, analysis and reporting of trials, meta-analyses and methodological research.
Applicants should have a postgraduate statistics qualification and at least 2 year's experience (5 years for appointment at senior level) in clinical trials and meta-analyses along with strong statistical and computing skills, a detailed knowledge of statistical packages (preferably SAS), good attention to detail, the ability to work both independently and with others, the ability to communicate statistical issues to non-statisticians and a desire to develop leadership skills in clinical research.
