A longitudinal analysis of the role of psychological factors in the
development of cancer,
diabetes, asthma, back pain and hypertension.
Professor Peter Thomas, Professor Roger Baker (Dorset HealthCare Trust);
Professor Kate Galvin
Cancer, diabetes, asthma, back pain and hypertension are chronic conditions
that have a high impact
on quality of life and the health service. This Studentship is for an
epidemiological analysis of two
large, longitudinal, child development studies. The aim is to test the
hypothesis that psychological
factors measured during childhood are linked to the later development of
these conditions. Such links
are likely to be complex, involving consideration of physical, social and
environmental factors, and so
will involve statistical modelling. Findings could have important
implications for understanding the
causes of ill health, and suggest possibilities for preventing them.
