On the plus side, it turns out that HDS itself really doesn't give a damn
about the extension. I can hdsOpen a file called hds_test, hds_test.sdf or
hds_test.sdfx and they all work.
It seems that HDSTRACE and NDF are themselves adding limitations to the
system and HDS is not itself to blame.
I'll look at HDSTRACE then....
