Dear list,
Has anyone come across examples of underground or semi-underground water wheels whose engine shafts are sunk directly below the wheel? Wheal Crebor in west Devon used this layout between 1808 and 1811, before it was abandoned in favour of the usual horizontal flatrods leading to a distant shaft. John Taylor was the engineer - does anyone know whether any of his other mines used such a system?
