Royal Geographical Society (with the IBG) Annual Conference 2006
30th August - 1st September, London
Call for papers on:
FORCED MIGRATION AND GLOBAL SOCIAL JUSTICE
A Session of the Population Geography Research Group
Convenors: Nissa Finney (Department of Geography, The University of
Liverpool) and Richard Black (Department of Geography, The University of
Sussex)
There are 19.2 million people worldwide who are of concern to the United
Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a rise of 13% from the
figure for 2004. Forced migration continues to be a critical global issue,
intertwined with international economics and politics including the 'war on
terror'. Arguments have been made that the trend for managed migration
policies that emphasise the need to combat international crime threaten the
humanitarian basis upon which the 1951 Refugee Convention was founded.
This session explores current debates in forced migration in broad relation
to the conference theme of global social justice. Both theoretical and
empirical papers are invited that discuss transnational and domestic
issues; and political, cultural, social and economic aspects of forced
migration. Topics may include:
" policy making and implementation
" relations between 'sending' and 'receiving' countries
" networks of decision making and facilitating
" discourses of migration
" integration of new immigrants
" the role of Geographers in addressing issues of forced migration
Paper proposals in the form of a 200 word abstract, using the RGS form
