TaskTracer - Next Generation of Desktop User Interfaces
HCI Research Assistantships for graduate students in Computer Science
School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Oregon State University
Corvallis, Oregon
Application Deadline: January 15th, 2006
Want to be part of research that is applying exciting HCI research to
achieve enormous broader impact? Come join a research group that is
building innovative next generation intelligent user interfaces for
day-to-day information work - document creation, email, web browsing, etc.
The TaskTracer (http://eecs.oregonstate.edu/TaskTracer) project at
Oregon State University is developing fully-functional prototypes of new
task-oriented personal computer environments that track a user's
interactions with applications, automatically organize the user's
information naturally according to tasks, and intelligently leverage the
collected data to make desktop applications more task-aware. TaskTracer
not only improves personal productivity by reducing physical overhead
and cognitive costs, but also will support collaboration in workgroups
by allowing the sharing of task profiles - records of how a user
completed a task, incorporating both the resources used, and high level
records of actions on those resources. The TaskTracer group has recently
received national attention - it is well-funded by federal sources such
as the National Science Foundation, DARPA, and industry sources such as
Intel, and its staff includes multiple professors, full time programming
and research staff, and numerous PhD, MS, and undergraduate research
assistants.
The TaskTracer group is now looking for graduate students, both MS and
PhD with background and interests in Human Computer Interaction,
Usability Engineering, or Cognitive Science to fill research
assistantships, starting Fall 2006 and likely continuing in future
years. We are looking for students to work and lead work on designing
and evaluating innovative user interfaces, designing and running user
studies, and analyzing data collected in user studies.
Required skills:
* Background in human-computer interaction, usability engineering,
cognitive science, information science, or related field.
* Undergraduate degree in computer science or background in basic
computer science (necessary for graduate coursework)
* Strong communication skills, particularly verbal
* Must enjoy and desire tight collaborative work
Things you should mention when applying, if appropriate (but not required):
* Outgoing personality, desire for leadership, desire to continually
improve one's environment
* Experience with designing user interfaces for information management,
particularly the desktop
* Experience with rapid visual prototyping
* Experience with designing or performing empirical user studies
* Experience working with artificial intelligence, knowledge management,
information retrieval
To apply for these positions, please submit application materials as
described at:
http://eecs.oregonstate.edu/graduate/admissions.html
Be sure to specify Human-Computer Interaction as your primary research
interest area. Also, please send a copy of a cover letter to Jon
Herlocker, [log in to unmask], explaining why you are
interested in HCI research on personal information systems.
If you have any questions, please contact
