I think that there is a lot of adaptation to local circumstances among
small local groups and among individuals. The dominant scheme of
directional correspondences. however, is the one that is almost all the
books and on almost all the websites. Thus, it's the one that *everybody*
can use.
In my experience, at least a few folks rely on these customary
correspondences
rather dogmatically. They have little or no sense that local circumstances
do differ. But I think the repetition in all the resources is the major
reason
so many hold fast to them. And put aside their inklings that local
conditions
are different.
