Lawraine,
In answer to your questions, I would say that my authority would be willing
to pay at around the £150 per day mark that Penny mentioned at the meeting.
This would be where we could identify a training option that met a specific
training need that could not be supplied to us by the authority itself. This
basically means that the only training we would consider would be
specifically records management content. Off site training is obviously best
delivered in one day blocks to avoid the intrusion of travel time into
working hours, and this would be our preferred option.
Believe it or not, I can not think off the top of my head of any specific
training we would like to see at this moment in time. This is not to say we
do not have training needs, or that we possess all the skills we require,
but it is simply that nothing stands out because we are too busy to step
back and do an analysis of what training we need to better achieve our
goals. This obviously won't be helpful to you, but perhaps it is indicative
of the wider problem (the reason you get blank looks from records managers
when you ask what training they want) which is that we don't necessarily
have the time or perspective to identify them for ourselves.
Kind regards,
Aidan

Dear All
Firstly, thank you for the opportunity to come and meet you at your
recent meeting in Sheffield.
As a result of that meeting, I was asked to more formally canvas members
with regard to possible future training opportunities.
Two things seemed to emerge from the meeting. One was an anxiety about
the price of courses, the other was a suggestion that a
para-professional level course be set up for people who had recently
become records managers, and would like to go on to the RM
qualification.
If I read the meeting correctly, you also felt that other, management
type courses, such as (Financial Management, Negotiation Skills,
Training the Trainers) were provided by local authorities and that your
members were able to take advantage of those opportunities should they
feel the need.
One possible way of taking this forward is to ask you to respond to this
email by answering these questions:
1) How much would you/your employer be willing to pay for a one-day
training course?
2) What format suits members best - 1 day, half a day, an hour on the
job?
3) What other training needs do you think need to be addressed?
When I have received your answers, I will then suggest some ideas that
you might consider.
Best Wishes
Lawraine
