In his report to the NHS (in England), the Chief Executive Nigel Crisp pays tribute to the way the NHS provides high quality services whilst continuing to change and improve. 'Delivering services for today whilst improving them for tomorrow requires skill and professionalism. Ultimately, success will depend on the people working in the NHS and its partner organisations who have so effectively created improvements in the last five years,' he says.

Achievements
The report goes on to show how NHS staff and organisations continue to deliver and improve services. It shows that:
* hospital waiting times are lower than ever before
* primary care, mental health, cancer and coronary heart disease services continue to improve
* patients have more choice and involvement in their own care.
Change
The report also points to the need for the NHS to continue to evolve to meet the needs of patients. It highlights some of the big changes appearing over the next year, and acknowledges the challenge they represent. They include:
* GPs giving patients a choice of hospital from January
* the spread of payment by results so more organisations are paid directly for their work
* measures to strengthen the way GP practices and PCTs plan and 'commission' a range of high quality services for patients
