Hear hear to Janet's recommendation of Ankarloo &
Clark, and indeed of the whole set of the Athlone
History of Witchcraft and Magic!
The stats for both trials and executions seem to have
been repeatedly revised downwards over the last 30
years or so, in all countries. When Keith Thomas wrote
"Religion and the decline of Magic" in 1972 he put
executions in England at 1000 guestimate; now it's
down to 500. One can't be precise since so many
regional court records are missing for part of the
relevant period.
"Nine million" for Europe as a whole was of course
always a nonsense, a cheap attempt to outdo the six
million Holocaust victims.
