It maybe that Moodle has taken off in FE because it's free but it's also very fortunate that it's at least as good as it's commercial counterparts.
This does mean that it can come in via the back door with minimal or no management involvement.
Years ago I never bought a VLE with the special funding we received because I could not locate any enthusiasm for VLE amongst senior college management.
Now we have Moodle and I'm still struggling to find understanding and enthusiasm in senior management.
I guess it's feasible that a whole college could adopt Moodle right under the nose of SMT and if they confine it's use to teaching and learning that will be fine.
If they, however, attempt some novel cross college activity that challenges the way the organisation works then feathers might be ruffled.

I'm inclined to disagree Noel, I believe that the Moodle story is based on lack of interest and subsequent funding and interest on behalf of the management. This is largely because the FE sector is always on the end of the budget experience and consequently management have to draw in the purse strings. except of course when it comes to management salaries. Whoops!!!.

Peter,
That's a fascinating result, even from this sample.
You're really looking for a Moodle for UK FE Moodlers, along the lines of Moodle.org but with an FE focus...
It's also fascinating how Moodle has captured the imagination of a lot of people in FE, and I don't believe it's because Moodle is '£free,' but because it's such a mighty educational tool (though £free helps, of course).
Noel
