Not wishing to be a kill joy, but these are far better handled by MS Sharepoint services which integrates directly into MS Office to make life even easier and has proper collaborative tools that no VLE has. However, it is a MS product so no doubt many people would reject it straight away.

Subject: Re: [VLES] Why use a Virtual Learning Environment?
A updated modified "selling kit" for staff/managers.
Add/delete as you feel fit and return to list.
Thanks
Why use a Virtual Learning Environment?
1. A simple way to put material on the web
Many staff put up their handouts, lecture slides, reading lists, and so
on. You can put your word files, PowerPoint slides, excel spreadsheets,
and so on, straight onto the Web. This allow students to go back over
materials after the lesson or if they're absent - anywhere where there
is an Internet-enabled PC. This improves access to learning off-campus,
especially for part time students. This is what students expect and
creates a competitive advantage.
2. Easily control access to your material
You can create groups which only have access to your material. However
they can access Moodle from anywhere in the world,
3. Reduction in paperwork
Handbooks can be stored centrally and handouts do not have to be
photocopied.
4. Allows experiments with more complicated tools (thereby enhancing
learning & teaching quality)
A VLE comes with tools for you to use quickly and easily such as
discussion boards, quizzes, and questionnaires. Some are using these for
surveys, student feedback tools, or tests to assist revision. These can
be set up to give instant feedback and to track progress.
5. Allows you to keep in touch with students out of class
If you want to contact students outside of class, or create a group for
them to discuss issues with each other, a VLE provides a facility so you
can quickly set up a threaded discussion group. This also encourages
participation and collaboration especially from the quieter students
6. Helping the students
A VLE can provide a single place for learning support material.
Parents/carers/mentors can be included.
