Subject: Therapeutic community closures in New Zealand / EFTC
discussion list / Global chat
Importance: High
Dear Eric,
I'm contacting you on behalf on the EFTC and other colleagues, some
members of the Association of Therapeutic Communities, and other colleagues.
We were sad to hear recently of the closure of a number of therapeutic
communities in New Zealand, the information was sent via a recent newspaper
article from New Zealand, although I do not have the article here to quote.
This must be a very worrying situation and colleagues were
interested to enter a dialogue with you and other therapeutic community
staff, to perhaps discuss the situation and attempt to discover ways in
which we can be supportive. Although we are separated by vast geographical
distance (we thought) it may be possible to bridge the distance via the
internet. The EFTC and all other interested colleagues, have access to an
"online discussion" web site, located at
[log in to unmask] this is a free service and may be
accessed via the EFTC web site, at www.eftc-europe.com
<http://www.eftc-europe.com/> , amongst others.
Or alternatively the site can be reached simply by e-mail at the
same address.
The brief discussions regarding the reports of the closures,
subsequent long waiting lists, and increase in potential death rate, of
prospective community members, seems to have contributed to a very
constructive idea of a "Global Chat," through the Therapeutic Communities
Discussion List web site. This could be a great idea, to mobilise not only
discussion, connecting staff and community members, but also a format to
attempt to create world wide support, for our friends and colleagues "down -
under" As the site and it's advantages are free, it simply requires a number
of people to collaborate together, discover what the possible problems may
be to do this, and then simply solve them.
I hope that you and the members of the Australasian Therapeutic
Communities Association, are positive to this idea and we look forward to
hearing from you as soon as possible.
Sincere regards,
Anthony Slater,
