Putting the ‘e’ into GI Science
Mark Birkin, School of Geography, University of Leeds
This seminar is concerned with the relationships between computational
grids, e-science and Geographical Information science. Grid technology
has been widely touted as the next big thing in computer science. The
seminar seeks to articulate the properties and capabilities of
computational grids, and to understand their significance within a variety
of application domains. It will be argued that, in theory at least, grid
technology is ideally equipped to address a wide range of problems within
Geographical Information Science and we will describe prototypical
examples of grid-enabled GI systems. Some major obstacles to successful
deployment of the new technologies will also be evaluated.
