Mixed-Methods Workshop
The two-day workshop on mixed-methods which was held at the University of
Manchester in October aimed to bring together a number of issues that have
arisen in the context of RMP-funded projects and to identify what future
developments are needed in this area.
Over fifty participants and speakers provided a wealth of expertise across a
broad disciplinary perspective and presentations, key points and background
papers from the meeting are available on the RMP website at

Presentations from the first of two half-day seminars held jointly by the
Social Research Association and the Research Methods Programme are now

Short courses at CCSR
There are places still available on the Data Mining, Structural Equation
Modelling and Surveys & Sampling courses early in 2006.
Booking forms and additional information on these and other courses
available at CCSR,University of Manchester are available at
http://www.ccsr.ac.uk/courses/external/2005-2006/
Introduction to Data Mining
Dates: 13/01/2006
Course Leader: Dr Mark Elliot
A basic introduction to data mining concepts and practical experience at
using the popular data mining package Clementine.
Structural Equation Modelling in Mplus
Date: 10-12/01/2006
Course Leader: Andrew Pickles and Graham Dunn, Dr Tim Croudace (University
of Cambridge)
The basic theory for measurement and structural models for continuous and
ordinal manifest variables is introduced. The preliminary focus is on
psychometric measurement models and covariance structures for univariate and
multivariate longitudinal data. The concept of an instrumental variable is
introduced and their use in an SEM set up is illustrated for tackling the
problem of non-compliance in trials and causal analysis in observational
data. Use of covariance mixture modelling is explored. Different
assumptions and treatments of missing data are described.
Surveys & Sampling
Date: 05/04/2006
Course Leader: Professor Ed Fieldhouse and Dr Mark Brown
This course examines how sampling techniques can be applied in survey
research. After an overview of sample surveys, participants are introduced
to the basic principles of sampling theory and how this relates to sampling
strategies and sample design in a practical context. Practical exercises
are included.
