MIGRATION - THE BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES
THE ROLE OF ADULT LEARNING IN MEETING THE NEEDS OF NEW AND EMERGING COMMUNITIES
NIACE ANNUAL SPRING POLICY CONFERENCE
Wednesday 1 February 2006, London
The increased global mobility of workers, especially to and within the European Union, offers clear benefits to the UK economy. However, increased mobility presents challenges as well as opportunities at local and regional levels. The challenges include identifying and providing for the specific needs of new arrivals, maintaining community cohesion and facilitating access to appropriate employment and learning opportunities.
This conference will explore these issues by:
· increasing awareness of the new patterns of migration to the UK
· examining how education, training and employment opportunities can be developed to meet the needs of new and emerging communities
· demonstrating that effective partnership working can enhance integration and community cohesion
The conference will be of interest to Local Government Association. Senior local authority officers, elected members, LA officers working on these issues. Lifelong learning development officers. LSC officers. Regional consortia. Regional government offices. Regional development agencies. Local strategic partnerships. FE colleges. Government departments. Housing associations. Sunrise pilots.
