The Open University’s centre on Innovation, Knowledge and Development
(IKD)
invites you to a lunch time seminar:
“Science and Citizenship in a Post-national World”
by
Prof. Sheila Jasanoff,
John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University
Thursday, 1st December, 12:30-2:00
Library Research Seminar Room
(Sandwiches/Coffee/Tea provided)
Abstract:
The mid-20th century’s disastrous alliances between science and the state
led many post-war thinkers and decision makers to posit that a strict
separation between science and politics was the most effective way to
safeguard both the production of knowledge and the progress of democracy.
In recent years, science studies scholarship has begun to challenge that
position, arguing that a closer integration would serve the interests of
both science and democratic politics. In this talk, I will explore how
the concept of citizenship can focus our attention on the desired forms of
integration between science and society. Using examples from the politics
of the global environment, I will show how citizens are acquiring tacit
rights as producers and holders of knowledge. I will discuss
institutional impediments to the effectuation of these rights and
speculate on ways of overcoming them.
