Is it possible that this raises the question of what constitutes a
martyr and martyrdom, and what criteria is used in defining and
describing them. For example the 'protestant martyrs' (of 1553-1558)
were put to death for being 'heretics', while the 'Catholic martyrs'
(post 1559) were put to death under laws relating to treason. Though I
suspect that my question may be a bit simplistic since all these
unfortunate people were (ultimately) put to death on grounds of their faith.
