Hi, everyone,
I want to become a qualified language teacher specialising in
Mandarin. I've already got a BA degree in Culture, Media & Communication
in England. It seems there are many paths for me to choose to become a
Chinese. But I am not sure which way is the best for my career. So far I
have got 4 possible ways which are:
1) Doing PGCE in Mandarin only: there are two schools who can
provide this course (Exeter and Goldsmith's);
2) Doing PGCE in two languages (Mandarin or one of European
language): only one school can provide this course which is Sheffield;
Personally, I am interested in German and have learnt some, but still a
beginner.
3) Doing Secondary PGCE in Media studies (cos it relates to my
degree subject): become a media studies teacher first and then introduce
Mandarin to schools.
4) Doing Primary PGCE: become a primary teacher, probably with
German and then introduce Mandarin to schools.
At the moment, the demand for Mandarin teachers in U.K. is still
limited, though increasing. Majority of Mandarin teachers are still
doing part-time teaching in schools. It seems that becoming a full-time
Mandarin teacher is very rare. So I think I wouldn't choose the first
option. Option 2 and 3 could be the first two I will consider. I am
still a little indecisive. Could you give me your advice on my
situation? Which is the best way to do? Are there any other possible
ones?
Thank you for your help!
All the best.
Yours sincerely,
Hao
