Hi Jeremy,
You're right that a 1.1 client cannot talk to a 2.1 server.
And vice versa.
That's why we're focusing on FTS for the goals for the SC. As
Steve says, 1.1 interfaces will still be available, and FTS
will be able to transfer files between a 1.1 SRM and a 2.1
SRM. So we don't need everyone to upgrade to a 2.1 interface
at the same time.
Various aspects of this issue have been presented (if perhaps
not discussed, interest has on occasion been underwhelming)
piecemeal over the last phone conferences. We have talked
about the goals, interoperability, testing, and such things.
I've also put it on the hepsysman agenda. I think it is
important to cover, even if people aren't overwhelmingly
interested. Yet.
DPM already has a 2.1 interface, dCache will get it and,
part of the question for dCache is whether sites should
upgrade to it via 1.6.6 or from wherever they are now - which
is part of the current discussion. Depends also on whether
1.6.6 goes into the next version of LCG.
Cheers,
--jens

Subject: Deployment of SRMv2.1
Dear All
Earlier Jamie Shiers was presenting on SC4 preparation and it became apparent that although the implementations of SRMv2.1 may be available in January, the experiments may not be ready to use the upgraded versions. Apparently the interfaces change between v1.1 and v2.1 in such a way that current service interfaces will not work in a backward compatible manner. This could impact when we want to move sites over to v2.1 and should be factored into our milestones. I will try to find out more but perhaps some of you already know more on this topic?
Jeremy
