Dear all
For the CUTG in Leeds, 24-26 March 2006, we are interested in putting together a
panel on approaches to 'race' in German literary and cultural studies of all
periods. The final format can be agreed with the participants, but it might
take the form of a handful of interlinked Diskussionsbeiträge on theoretical
approaches or sample analyses followed by a panel discussion. Participants
would have had the opportunity to think about each other's work in advance and
to prepare responses. In this way, we could assess the range of different
approaches being taken by scholars at UK and Irish universities, and perhaps
even think in terms of future collaborations. The panel would therefore be put
together with this in mind. Contributions from postgraduates working in this
field are also particularly welcome.
Some possible topics for discussion (by no means an exclusive list):
Post-colonialist theory in German literary studies
Eugenics
Orientalism, or the German Afrika-Diskurs
Intersection of 'race' with other discourses, such as gender, nation, etc.
Primitivism
Discussions of the portrayal of particular ethnic groups in literary texts
etc.
All participants should be fully paid-up members of the CUTG
If interested in participating, please contact Dr Peter Davies or Dr Mary
Cosgrove (University of Edinburgh):
