EXTANT, the first British blind theatre company, presents the premiere UK
tour of WEIGHTS
by Lynn Manning
ONE BLIND MAN'S JOURNEY
"In 1978 Mr. Manning was a cocky 23-year-old with a new job and a hot date
when he dropped into a Los Angeles bar. He left in an ambulance, having been
shot in the head by a stranger who had taken a dislike to him. His identity
in the world's view changed that day from black man to blind man." Los
Angeles Times.
WEIGHTS is a powerful performance that utilises prose, poetry and live music
accompaniment to tell the real-life story of Lynn Manning. A passionate and
inspiring one-man show, WEIGHTS is about a man who has overcome tremendous
obstacles in life. Lynn grew up as an impoverished child in the foster care
system of South Central Los Angeles, the son of an abusive father and
alcoholic mother. At the age of 23 he was shot in a senseless bar fight,
losing his sight completely.
The show traces Manning's ultimate transcendence of the senseless violence
that changed his life, and his courageous personal journey from being
'black' to being 'blind'. Determined to pursue his dreams, he has now become
a successful playwright, actor, world-class athlete and dedicated volunteer.
"Universal, cathartic, bravely revealing and poignant. Manning knows how to
twist a phrase and lash out an insight with agility and strength"
Los Angeles Times
The electric combination of this most compelling of stories with this most
charismatic of performers makes WEIGHTS an explosive and entertaining event.
In the USA, WEIGHTS won three NAACP Theater Awards, including one for Best
Actor. Since its debut in 2001, it has been performed all over the US as
well as internationally: in locations such as Los Angeles, New York,
Washington, D.C., Canada, and Croatia. It now embarks on a National Tour of
the UK.
Yesterday, she said,
"I couldn't be so strong, if it happened to me."
"You have to lift weights," I quipped.
She laughed and tapped me on the bicep.
