Hi Jac,
I just thought of something else that might interest you: an
exploration of Western perceptions of Asia's 'dark' history with
respect to human rights.
When I went to Singapore, I expected a very closed and regimented
state, complete with secret police to monitor people's gum chewing and
toilet flushing. Based on high-profile news stories about Singaporeans
and Westerners alike being caned and/or jailed for violations of public
conduct laws, I was quite terrified.
It was almost disappointing to arrive and find people casually
jaywalking and smoking without throwing their butts in the garbage.
Many people with whom I spoke said that Western perceptions of the
State's 'dark' spectre over citizens were badly distorted, though some
were careful to reassure me that the secret police did exist, and were
watching ordinary Singaporeans carefully.
I think there are many sterotypes regarding Asian human
rights/violations (which probably vary vastly from nation to nation).
These stereotypes might be explored from a 'dark tourism' perspective.
