>=Hi Lesley,

Your work sounds great - and difficult. I think we all struggle with how to
evaluate community work in way that is meaningful to community members yet
also convincing for funders and for publication to inspire others. In the
southwest we have been considering participatory appraisal as a useful
approach. There is a PA network for the north east based at University of
Northumbria - if you are not already familiar with it, have a look at their
website, as you may find some inspiration and support there. For example if
you were able to do one of their training courses maybe your community
alliance work could be used as a mini-placement for a brief appraisal as a
starter...

Their website is on
http://northumbria.ac.uk/sd/academic/sas/sas_research/pa/?view=Standard

Good luck,

Annie Mitchell

>Hi Lesley,
>Good to hear about your work. I have had a quick look at the website and had
a couple of thoughts about self-help materials - one is that in the link to
'Self Help' you mention publications that can be borrowed, but don't link to
the Northumberland self help guides available online -
>perhaps it might be worth establishing a link so that people can check out
what's available online (if they've made it as far as the website..). The
other resource which might be helpful is the www.glasgowsteps.com website
which has another set of self-help
>materials available online.  Jim White is the head of that service I think;
you may want to make contact with him, and there may be useful discussions to
be had regarding evaluating the impact of the website. There are yet more
resources, including a range of translated self-help
>materials, available via mentalhealthinmanchester.org.uk, which might be
worth checking out. I am not sure about the demographics of the
Stockton/Hardwick area, but imagine there may be some minority ethnic
communities, if small.

>Hi,

>My name is Lesley and I am a counselling psychologist working as a community
>counsellor in an area of Stockton on Tees called Hardwick. Hardwick scores
>in the top 10% of deprived wards nationally. My role is to provide a
>counselling/psychological service to the people of this area. This includes,
>individual face to face work, group work, community development, training
>other professionals in matters of mental health, attending community group

>communityalliancehardwick.co.uk

>I would welcome comments on this site.

>Many of the residents have enduring mental health problems and finding my
>role is not easy. I have been in post for 15 months. This is new project and
>if it is successful then it may be that it is rolled out in other wards

>I have attempted to engage residents in research to determine what they
