CALL FOR POSITION PAPERS
CHI 2006 Workshop: Usability Research Challenges for Cyberinfrastructure and Tools
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Venue: Montreal, Canada http://www.chi2006.org/
Dates: 23 April 2006
Website: www.ncess.ac.uk/chi-workshop
We invite position papers for the CHI 2006 Workshop entitled "Usability Research Challenges for Cyberinfrastructure and Tools".
Cyberinfrastructure (e-Science in the UK) is a global project in technological innovation whose aim is nothing less than to bring about a radical transformation in research practices. The cyberinfrastructure vision is of data and information intensive, large-scale, distributed, dynamic and inter-disciplinary research collaborations. As the focus moves from concept demonstrators to generic tools supporting real users, and users' experiences of pilot projects is absorbed and analyzed, important challenges for usability research are beginning to emerge. Meeting these challenges is a strongly multidisciplinary endeavor, requiring close cooperation between usability researchers, developers and users of cyberinfrastructure.
This one-day workshop seeks, within the context of the CHI conference, to engage the CHI community in an articulation of emerging cyberinfrastructure usability challenges and solutions.
Position papers are invited on any relevant topic, including (but not limited to):
o Case studies of research practices and their implications for the cyberinfrastructure vision.
o Case studies of data creation, management and sharing in large scale, collaborative, distributed research and their implications o for the design of user interfaces and tools.
o Case studies of usability issues and solutions in tools and applications of cyberinfrastructure.
o Usability issues relating to trust in large scale, collaborative research, including trust among collaborators and trust in the o technologies of collaboration.
o Functional requirements and user interfaces for collaboratories.
o User-centered methodologies for requirements gathering, design, development and evaluation of cyberinfrastructure and tools.
